    It’s always amazing to step up on a stage in front of thousands of fans, said James Young, guitar player for the Eli Young Band.

    “When the crowd’s singing back to you, the songs you’ve written or the songs you’ve cut, it’s an amazing feeling,” said Young. “It’s the best job in the world. There’s a lot that goes on behind all that, but the 90 minutes that we’re up on stage, there’s no better feeling in the world."

    This weekend, many of the voices he’ll be hearing in that crowd will belong to the River Region. The Eli Young Band hits the main stage at Alabama National Fair on Saturday at 7 p.m.

    Along with Young, the band includes Mike Eli (vocalist), Jon Jones (bass) and Chris Thompson (drums).

    Eli Young Band is one of five big acts at this year’s fair, with Cameo and En Vogue on Sunday starting at 7 p.m.,  Collective Soul on Nov. 4, and Hunter Hayes on Nov. 5.

    Mike Eli and James Young met when they were placed as dorm roommates at the University of North Texas during their freshman year. The two formed a duo called Eli & Young and played at local house parties and bars until being joined by Jon Jones and Chris Thompson, finally becoming the Eli Young Band in 2000.

    They continued to play local venues and expanded their audience to other states before being offered a record deal from Carnival Records. They released their first studio album, Level, in 2005. Being from Texas, the band has Texas country influences and Level is considered to be their first and last Texas county album.

    They band has said that they drew influences from Texas country musicians like Pat Green and Jack Ingram but also from other legends like Willie Nelson and Bruce Springsteen. James Young said of the band and their influences, “We always just wanted to make great music and songs with meaning. Music that just really said something.”
