Emmanuel Arinze Ifeajuna ( – 25 September )[1] was a Nigerianarmy major and high jumper. He was the first Black African to win a gold medal at an international sports event when he won at the British Empire and Commonwealth Games. His winning mark and personal best of 6&#;ft 8&#;in (&#;m) was a game record and a British Empire record at the time.[2]
An Igbo from Onitsha, he was a science graduate of the University College of Ibadan and became involved in politics. He later joined the military and played a role in the Nigerian coup d'état.
Life and career

[edit]Born in Onitsha,[3] he attended Dennis Memorial Grammar School in his home town and displayed the characteristics that would later define his life. He trained in the high jump under his games teacher,[4] and he also took part in a protest that closed down the school for a term. He graduated from high school in [5] Ilesa Grammar School also claims him as a past alumnus.[6] This is disputed, although he did do summer school teaching at the institution.[7]

The subject matter of this project report deals with the assessment of the place of Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna in Nigeria’s socio-political history between January – August This topic has agitated the mind of the author for quite a long time. He was particularly motivated to undertake this study after reading many books on Nigeria-Biafra Civil War. He observed with interest the conflicting reports of these authors on the immediate and remote causes of the civil war and the role of Major Ifeajuna in the coup of January 15th, ? He felt therefore that since the war was a major chapter in the socio-political life of Nigeria, efforts should be made to assess the role of Major Emmanuel Ifeajuna, one of the key players of the coup that eventually led to the civil war.
