Ha iniziato a lovorare in gruppi di R&B, con Tuff Green, con suo padre, con Jackie Breston, Saunders King, con Lou Sargent nel 1951, con Lionel Hampton, i Tennessee State Collegians e Willis Jackson. Terminato il servizio militare nel 1955, invogliato da Count Basie a dedicarsi più al jazz, ha messo su un quartetto e si è trasferito a New York dove ha ottento diverse scritture ed ha inciso i primi dischi. Nel 1958 ha lavorato in duo con Charles Mingus, ha fatto una tournée in Italia con i Mills Brothers. Si è stabilito a Los Angeles, ha registrato con Booker Little, Howard McGhee, Teddy Edwards, Philly Joe Jones, Louis Haynes, Milt Turner, Paul Chambers, Sam Jones, Leroy Vinegar. Purtroppo una depressione nervosa lo ha portato a sospendere l’attività per vari ricoveri in ospedali psichiatrici, tra i quali il tristemente noto Camarillo. E’ ritornato in attività nel 1976 e nel 1980 ha partecipato al Festival di Montreux.
