The head of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has stated that the elections of May 11, 2024 will be a unique event for Albania, as for the first time half of the electorate will be abroad.
According to Berisha, these are the first elections in the last 34 years, where a significant part of the voters are scattered around the world, creating a new reality for Albanian politics.
Berisha emphasized that, in the face of this reality, it is imperative that the electoral campaign be developed with the same importance and attention for Albanians living abroad, as for those who are inside Albania. He emphasized that the adaptation and resizing of the Democratic Party’s activity for this category of voters are essential for the victory of the opposition.
“It must be admitted that the political forces in Albania do not have enough experience to conduct the campaign abroad. However, we must bear in mind that our campaign outside Albania is of the same importance as the one inside the country”, said Berisha.

The Prime Minister's Democratic Party (PDSH) is said to have won the general elections on 28th June in Albania.
According to an exit poll undertaken in 12 of the country's regions by Gani Boni, broadcast by the television channel TV Klan, the Democratic Party is due to win 47.5% of the vote ahead of its main rival, the Socialist Party (PSSH) led by Mayor of Tirana, Edi Rama, who is due to win 38.8% of the vote. The Socialist Movement for Integration (LSPI) of Ilir Meta is due to win 6.5% of the vote.
Another exit poll by the IPR Marketing institute credits Sali Berisha's Democratic Party with a four point lead over his socialist rivals.

Turnout was high rising to over 60% in comparison with 56% during the previous elections on 3rd July 2005.
